Upon a recent count, I discovered over 500 characters in the HSA Universe, which is unsurprising since the main series is twenty-four books long. I’m very meticulous when it comes to characters; categorising them in huge spreadsheets. I’m also a stickler for continuity; something else you’ll discover in this section. I’ve documented every new character, any additions to old and look to these masses of spreadsheets every time I sit down to write to make sure there are no inconsistencies. I loathe reading a book series only to discover that the author has created a character in one book and forgotten everything about them in the next. I am not that author.
So this page and all the off-shoots to come are dedicated to the HSA Universe.
I was advised recently by a dear friend of mine that perhaps since I have so many characters that I ease my readers into this world. I hope one day people can look to this section for guidance when reading my books because while I can remember all of my characters, I respect my readers may not.
Why do I have so many characters? Why bother?
Well in truth, I got so fed up reading books as a teenager where the main character only had one friend. I was in no means popular as a teenager (far from it) but I had more than one friend. A whole group of misfits in fact. Reading about a protagonist with one friend became dull. Hillside Academy is set at a boarding school which is chock-full of people and I wanted to flesh out my series with as many unique characters as possible – all with their own personalities, wants, desires and individual idiosyncrasies – so it would be just like school. Just like the real world. This database or ‘Wiki’ is, in a way, a dedication to all of my characters – the good, the bad and the ugly.
On each character page, you may notice these: *. These are indications that certain information is either being kept hidden to save spoilers or that I don’t know. I’m not God and as I write, I discover. If I haven’t spent as much time on a character, I will not know as much.
